Where the Heck Do We Start?

EVERYTHING needed doing.
Every Damn Thing.
We couldn't pick a starting point.

The smart thing to do would have been to gut the place and live somewhere else while a gang of amazing tradespeople worked their magic on the place.

Errrrr – have you met my husband? He can do anything.  But he has no time and if things are going to be done, they’re going to be done RIGHT.

Jim’s the kind of guy who complains about the cost of everything, but then if something is cheap he thinks it can’t be any good.

I can’t put it off any longer. Here’s the house when we bought it.

Unfortunately there are no realtor photos (I call them “magic camera pix”)…

Kitchen

The kitchen was so UN-Me that you might’ve thought it was the first thing we would tackle  – but Jim said “Noooooooo – we need to do electrical first”.

Note: The fridge couldn’t open when the dishwasher door was open.

Note: Daylight panel in ceiling.

Note: Walker. It isn’t mine!

We got new appliances and fit them in somehow.

FUN FACT – in the entire kitchen there were only TWO Drawers!

Laundry

The laundry was stuffed into the back “mud room” area

Living/Dining

Pink carpets and dusky pink walls…vertical venetian blinds with a lot of cat damage – and old style valances over the windows. See what I mean about not knowing where to start…

Basement

The basement had the most potential in lots of ways – a biggish office and 2 bedrooms, a rec. room and lots of storage closets – as well as a cold room under the stairs and another storage room at the front of the house.

But there was this....

We couldn’t get enough of the garden. The previous owner had meticulously planned the most beautiful oasis in her back yard – and you’d never know it from the road.

SO where did we start?

We spent the first year completely avoiding the house. It was nice to be settled and to see our “stuff” for the first time in a couple of years.

We built our pond. We love it, and it gets better every year. We lived in the house and figured out what we wanted to do – and it’s lucky we did wait because what we ended up doing was vastly different to our ideas on Day 1.
